Music Performance Adjudication
~Virtual Solo & Ensemble~

General Information

Adjudication Date: Saturday, May 15, 2021
Place: Virtual Submission ONLY - no physical site
Chairperson: Chris Elbing
Event Registration Form

This year, the North Carolina Bandmasters Eastern District will provide its members’ students with the opportunity to perform as a soloist or ensemble...virtually! Each student performance is adjudicated according to certain criteria and then given one of five ratings. This event allows students to gain additional performance practice, and receive positive and constructive feedback to help improve their musicianship in the future. Seasoned educators will serve as adjudicators. Schools will submit video recordings and PDF scores for the adjudicators. More details on the specific processes for this will be coming soon.
IMPORTANT: In order for students to participate in any district event, such as All-District Auditions, MPA, or Solo and Ensemble MPA, the director must be a paid member TWO WEEKS prior to the early registration deadline for that particular event.

Why Participate?

How to incorporate?

The benefit of having your students work on solos or chamber groups is that you are promoting:
  1. Performance opportunity for students and possible end of semester project.
  2. Foster collaboration
  3. Confidence. If students are playing 1 part by themselves, they must learn to play the correct notes and rhythms. We all know that children feel safety in numbers, but the stronger the individual player is, the better your band will be.
  4. Appreciation of varied literature. There is no state list for this event. Students can play classical, jazz, or pop music. There is a lot of music out there for students to find.
  1.  Invest in a few duet, trio, quartet books. I also recommend purchasing flexible ensemble books such as Compatible Duets, Trios, Quartets, Duets for All, Progressive Duets, and so on. Chamber music is usually very affordable and much cheaper than concert repertoire.
  2. Allow students to rehearse in class if meeting in person
  3. Check which books are available on smartmusic and purchase copies of books that are on this site. Students can then practice using the accompaniments and allow you to provide feedback. See this link for the solo and ensemble search. The Standard of Excellence Solos Books 1-3 and, Rubank Solos, Festival Solos, Accessible Solos, etc. all make for great starts.

Students and Parents:  Eligibility requirements for student events in the elementary, middle, and high school grade level are set by each NCMEA member section (Band, Choral, Jazz, and Orchestra).  NCMEA supports each member section’s autonomy when setting criteria for participation in student events.  Please refer to each section’s webpage for additional information.
